Midweek Music Miscellany

11:30Wednesday

11:30Wednesday

Midweek Music Miscellany challenges the orthodoxy of most other music offerings on Irish daytime radio by offering a very wide range of musical genres during its weekly transmission, Wednesday mornings from 11.30am For example, pairing Nina Simone with Tom Petty would not occur to most music programme planners as the utilised computer software would possibly self-destruct in a Mission Impossible type gesture. However, the use of human knowledge in the compilation of Midweek Music Miscellany overrides any possible glitch, thus ensuring that random pairings as per above, are part of this show’s attractiveness to the more adventurous ear. Art of The Trio is a regular show feature, giving three tracks from an artist or based on a theme. Listeners contribute to this feature, thus ensuring democratic credentials can be claimed.

It’s All in the Song

12:00Saturday

12:00Saturday

Peter Grogan’s programme “It’s All in the Song” is an hour-long proof of just that. For Peter, the lyrics are where it is at and the calibre of the artists featured, from at home and abroad, from week to week, guarantee that melodies are married seamlessly to the lyrics. But it’s not all serious stuff. Expect the unexpected, the comedy interval, the parody, the well-chosen poem and often the live studio guest. Peter is a constant concert and gig goer. This is very much reflected in his programme each Saturday at 12pm. His playlist will include singer songwriter material, folk, traditional and Americana. In fact, expect to find anything there – as Peter says himself. “if it’s good I’ll play it”. Peter’s informative links and natural, easy, humorous style of presentation all add up to a lovely programme. each week on 103.2 Dublin City FM for one purpose only, to prove that it’s all in the song.

Jazz Mine

17:00Saturday

17:00Saturday

Jazz Mine is a play on jasmine which, as you can read below, is one possible originators of JAZZ as a description of the music being featured on this weekly show. Jazz keeps developing so the intention is to keep the focus on newer stuff with many forays into the Jazz Mines to illustrate past jazz musical triumphs. I hope that you can join me on this ongoing voyage & that your email, Facebook & Twitter communications will bring me down new shafts as we explore the MINE that comprises JAZZ in all its shapes & sizes. “On the subject of the word JAZZ Garvin Bushell, was sure it had a fragrant origin. In his 1988 book Jazz from the Beginning, he remembers his early days in music, around 1916: “The perfume industry was very big in New Orleans in those days, since the French had brought it over with them. They used jasmine — oil of jasmine — in all different odours to pep it up. It gave more force to the scent. So, they would say, ‘let’s jass it up a bit,’ when something was a little dead.” John Philip Sousa suggested in the 1920s that jazz slid into our vocabulary by way of the vaudeville stage, in which all the acts would come back on to the stage at the end of a performance to give a rousing, boisterous finale called ajazzbo, a type of low physical comedy.”
